Ofgem is the independent economic regulator for Great Britain’s (GB) energy sector. We are the sector’s watchdog, working to protect the interests of current and future energy consumers. Having access to secure, affordable and low-carbon energy is fundamental to how our society and economy operates. Our core purpose is to ensure that all consumers get good value and service from the energy market. We work closely with, but are independent of, government, the energy industry and other stakeholders within a legal framework set out in legislation.
The energy sector is undergoing a massive, technology-driven revolution as we move to a more sustainable, low-carbon energy system which will protect the energy consumers of tomorrow. Innovations such as electric vehicles, distributed renewable generation, smart meters and appliances and the big data economy are now starting to take their grip on the energy sector. In the future, car manufacturers could buy and sell energy to households via electric vehicle batteries to help balance the electricity system. Technology companies selling smart appliances like fridges and heating systems could sell us energy services and we might stop buying gas and electricity as we think about it today. We know change is coming and that within 10 years the energy sector will look fundamentally different to how it does today.
We are looking for talented people to join Ofgem to help us revolutionise the energy market, unlock innovation and make sure that all consumers – including those who find it harder to engage - benefit from changes ahead whilst continuing to enjoy good levels of protections given energy is an essential service. We need to ensure that people in vulnerable situations have the specific protections they need and that suppliers make additional efforts to ensure they treat these customers fairly.
Ofgem has people from a range of backgrounds with a wide range of skills and capabilities, including economics, project delivery, public policy and energy sector specialists. We are committed to being a diverse and inclusive organisation, bringing people in the team from different areas with transferrable skills and are seeking to be representative of the consumers we serve.
